Safety and Precautions

Motorcycle accidents are a daily occurrence. Though rentals are easily available, riding a motorbike or scooter is inadvisable unless you are an experienced rider. If you do ride, cover your skin and wear a good helmet.

Incidents of street crime involving foreign visitors are rare, and when they do occur they are energetically investigated by the police. Nevertheless, the usual precautions should be taken when walking the city streets, and particularly the sois, at night. Leave your valuables in your hotel (either in a room safe or with the proprietor). If you leave your passport in the hotel, make sure to carry a copy—it's an offense not to carry some form of identification. Women are advised to carry handbags on the side of the sidewalk that's farthest from the street.
